This Gokak Falls is formed by the Ghataprabha River. The Ghataprabha River jumps into the Gokak Valley from a horse-shoe-shaped rock bed. The Ghataprabha River originates near the Phatakwadi Lake in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. From there, it flows through the hills bordering Maharashtra and Karnataka and meets the Hidkal Dam in Karnataka. Then, coming out of the Hidkal Dam, it creates the Gokak Falls in the Gokak Valley. This Ghataprabha River is a tributary of the Krishna River and it meets the Krishna River at Chikka Sangam before the Almatti Dam.
