Jaigad Fort, also known as the Fort of Victory. Jaigad Fort was built by the Sultans of Bijapur in the 16th century to control and regulate the Sea trade between Sangameshwar to Ratnagiri through the Shashtri River Bay. Near Jaigad, the Shashtri River enters the Arabian Sea forming a Bay. So this fort has been built here to have control over Jaigad Bay. Later, this fort was captured by the Naiks of Sangameshwar. Naiks fiercely fought with the Portuguese and the Bijapur Sultans to retain the fort and Succeeded. The fort then came under the rule of Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Peshwas, and Kanhoji Angre. Then Kanhoji Angre renovated this fort. In June 1818, this fort was captured by the British without any struggle during the Third Anglo-Maratha War.
