Specialty of Shri Kshetra Mallikarjun / Vilasgad Fort, Yedenipani
Shri Kshetra Mallikarjun / Vilasgad Fort is located near the Yedenipani village in Walwa taluka in Sangli district of Maharashtra state, India. Shri Kshetra Mallikarjun and Vilasgad Fort both are in the same place. This place is also called Mallikarjun Hills. Due to the presence of an ancient Mallikarjun temple on this hill station, this place got the name Shri Kshetra Mallikarjun or Mallikarjun Hills.
Shri Kshetra Mallikarjun / Vilasgad Fort is near to Kolhapur-Karad Highway. You can bring your vehicles up to the foot of the Mallikarjun Hills. There is a good road to come here and there is free parking too. To reach Mallikarjun temple from parking, you will have to climb around 700 to 800 stairs. If you want, you can do trekking also. There are small mountain paths from the surrounding villages to climb this big hill station. You can do trekking from there.
As this is a hill station there will be snakes and wild animals here. So be careful when you go there. Due to the lack of security guards, this place has become the favorite place for bad boys for all kinds of bad activities. So be careful of such bad people also. Always go with your family and friends group.
An ancient Shiva temple is situated on the second top of this hill station. Its name is Mallikarjun temple. So this place is called Shri Kshetra Mallikarjun or Mallikarjun Hills. Mallikarjuna Hills is located in the Mahadev Mountain Range. This place has historical importance as well as religious importance. You can visit Mallikarjun temple anytime. But the rainy season is the best time to visit Mallikarjun Hills. On Shravan Mondays and Maha Shivratri days, thousands of devotees gather here.
Mythological Story behind the Shri Kshetra Mallikarjun
Shri Mallikarjun temple is situated inside a big cave on top of this mountain. This cave is made from a single big stone. Maybe it must have been built during the period of Yadavas.
It is said that sage Agastya and his wife Lopamudra performed penance here and established a Shivalinga. That is now called Mallikarjun. Along with this, there are small temples of Somnath, Umashankar, Bhimashankar, Ganesh and Kartik. And there is also a crooked-necked Nandi here. This is a special Nandi. You would not have seen such Nandi anywhere else.
History of Vilasgad Fort of Mallikarjun Hills
Vilasgad Fort is located on the top of Mallikarjun Hill station. We do not have the exact information about the construction of this fort. Different people tell different stories without any solid evidence. But we can surely say that this fort must have joined the Maratha Empire during the period of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Earlier it was just called Bale-Killa. Now it has been named Vilasgad Fort.
By looking at the structure of this fort, We can say that it has been built to keep an eye on the surrounding places. This fort was built just for surveillance purposes. There is no trace of the safety fort. Unfortunately, now the entire fort has not survived. Everything is destroyed. Only some remains remained. Yet we found some interesting things as listed below;
1) Small Small Water Tanks in Caves: While going to Vilasgad fort from Mallikarjun temple, In between the way you will see some small small water tanks in the caves which were used for water storage.
2) Fort’s Embankment and The Flag: At the entrance, you will find some broken parts of the embankment of the fort. Near to that, you will see the Saffron flag there.
3) Lime Stone Crusher: Near to the flag you will find one small lime crusher which was used to prepare the lime to build the fort.
4) Chand Bhukari Baba Darga: There is one ancient Darga on the top of this hill station. This is called Chand Bhukari Baba Darga. There is a Vitthal Rukmini temple next to it. It is the sign of the Hindu-Muslim Unity of our ancestors.
5) Small Ruined Krishna Temple: There is a small ruined temple in front of Vitthal Rukmini temple. There is no idol in this temple. Local people say that this was the Krishna temple and idols of this old temple are now kept in the new temple. This small temple is almost destroyed. Yet it grabs your attention.
6) Command of the Fort: You will find a small destroyed command of the fort there. This is the only evidence left here to call it a fort.
7) Horse Pond / Old Well: You will see one big well there. A lot of confusion and differences of opinion are there about it. Some people say it was a horse pond that was used for watering and bathing horses. And some people say it was just a well which is used as a source of water. Whatever it may be. You just enjoy the beauty of the place. The rainy season is the best time to visit Vilasgad fort.
